Mission & History
Our Mission
To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
At the YMCA of East Tennessee, we believe in creating a welcoming community where everyone belongs, regardless of age, income, or background.

Our Vision
We are committed to building a better future for all — one rooted in community, belonging, and well-being. Every program, class, and outreach effort is designed to strengthen individuals and families across East Tennessee.

Our History
The YMCA of East Tennessee has been a cornerstone of Knoxville since 1854, when it was founded by the Second Presbyterian Church. Ours was one of the very first 10 YMCA charters in the U.S., established just three years after the YMCA’s founding in Boston.
From a small gathering of community members to a network of five full-service branches and 20 childcare sites, the YMCA of East Tennessee has touched the lives of generations. Today, we serve more than 50,000 East Tennesseans each year through programs that nurture youth, promote healthy living, and inspire social responsibility.

Our Values
Achievement: Everyone is supported in achieving their goals.
Relationship: Everyone is surrounded with positive relationships.
Belonging: Everyone should feel welcome, included, and connected.
